Socio-Economic
The impacts of over a decade of conflict have been disastrous on the socio-economic sector of the Syrian Arab Republic. Decades of development were reversed, infrastructure was wrecked, immeasurable capital – both human and physical – was lost, and the social fabric of the country was shattered. The situation is complex and fluid, and data generation in conflict contexts is known to be difficult. Since its establishment, NAFS has been leading the process of data generation and evidence-based analysis of the impacts of various policies. NAFS regularly studies the repercussions of the Syrian conflict to ensure that the policy options developed are relevant and up-to-date. NAFS publishes various periodic documents and policy briefs assessing macro-economic developments, as well as sector-by-sector damages, needs and coping mechanisms. Key flagship reports include Syria at War: Five Years On; Syria at War: Eight Years On; Strategic Policy Alternative Framework I; and Strategic Policy Alternative Framework II. These reports provide comprehensive assessments of the economic, governance and social impacts of the conflict. NAFS socioeconomic analysis looks towards the future and the possible paths towards just and inclusive peacebuilding as well as equitable economic recovery. It does so by providing policy recommendations. Recently, NAFS launched technical working groups of Syrian experts on key topics to validate these policy proposals and translate them into guidance and how-to notes for implementation.
